Book Club x Women’s Safety Evening

1 Nov 2026, 4:00 pm · Brisbane / Meanjin · Flying Colours Bar

A women's safety conversation × Book Club Meet This past month, the headlines across Australia have been relentless. Story after story of violence against women has left so many of us angry, heartbroken and tired. So this month, we're opening with a conversation about female self-defence, and every woman goes home with a free safety whistle and safety keychain, plus goodies like bookmarks and temporary tattoos. Antonella Spatola from Wisdom for Women has spent more than 25 years teaching women's self-defence. She'll talk us through de-escalation, what happens in our bodies when we freeze, and how to find our voice under pressure. It's not about fear. It's about discovering what you're capable of. There'll be time for questions, and you'll also take home a card listing where to find support. In the second half, we turn to the book. We'll be discussing Discontent by Beatriz Serrano, a darkly funny novel about burnout, corporate absurdity and wanting more from life. Expect big conversations about work, capitalism and existential dread, with a glass of something and plenty of laughs. You don't need to have finished it. Every ticket is pay what you can and 100% of proceeds go to women in crisis through Micah Projects. 📅 Sunday 1 November, 4pm–8pm 📍 Flying Colours, West End (upstairs mezzanine) This topic may hit close to home. There'll be a quiet space if you need to step away, and you're welcome to come and go as you need.
